The concept for this library was conceived as a “library in the trees.” The library features a panoramic circular view of a heavily wooded, historic park. Great care was taken to integrate the library into the natural landscape of the site and into the context of the surrounding area. The project was able to preserve almost all of the existing trees on the site.
Because the site is situated within a floor plain, the library floor level was raised four feet above the surrounding ground line. The higher floor level not only protects the library from flooding, but also gives the building a prominent elevation and provides great views of the landscape.
Inside the library you will find sculptures, glass etchings, custom furniture, and specially designed children’s furnishings. The interior of the library was further enhanced by a two story rotunda with clerestory windows that pour natural light into the core of the library building.
The project was completed in late 1992.
